Holidays and weight change

Lou Boden

It's holiday time! Finally, things are starting to open up a little and for lots of people that means the long awaited one or two weeks holiday. Holidays are the best, a break from the normal routine, a chance to spend quality time with loved ones and take some time to relax. But, holidays can also present a bit of a challenge If you’re worried about gaining weight. You've worked really hard to get to this point and you're a bit panicked that you'll blow all your progress. If this is you, then this is just a gentle reminder that:

  • Holidays are to be enjoyed

  • It’s normal to gain a bit of weight on holiday but you can control how much

  • It’s only been a few days so it's likely to be a lot of water

Now, I’m not saying you should go all out at every single meal, eating and drinking everything in sight. But, enjoying a bit more or different food and drink than you would have normally is ok and nothing to feel guilty for.

Some things I do on holiday that you might find helpful:

Breakfast - I try and keep this the same as I would have at home, for me this is oats or eggs

Lunch or tea (dinner) - I pick one of these to be my more indulgent meal and try to keep the other closer to what I would usually eat

Walking - I try to get my 10k steps in, it makes me feel better and it’s usually not too difficult to do if you’re exploring new places

The image shows my 2kg weight gain after a fab weeks holiday with family and friends. I ate and drank more than I would usually and I had a brilliant time, What happens now? I just go back to my normal way of eating and lifting weights. No punishment diets needed.

Enjoy your well deserved holidays.
